OSCOV Show - 2005

In conjunction with Collectors Corner the OSCOV Show and Melbourne International Orchid Festival was held between the 19th and 21st August. The tent went up on Monday and by Tuesday afternoon societies were busy building their stands which were completed by Wednesday. Thursday the judges descended on the tent and the show was judged. Congratulations goes to Gippsland Orchid Club and West Gippsland Orchid Club for their champion stands. Congratulations must also go to Phil Grech for his Dendrobium teritifolium which was Champion Orchid of the Show (Non-Commercial) and to Castle Creek Orchids for their Lc. Burgundy Gem 'Arcadia' which was Champion Orchid of the Show (Commercial). The show this year was again a great success and broke attendance records. Many stated that they felt the quality of the orchids in the show was superior to past years.

As well as people from all over Victoria the show was well supported with keen enthusiasts from all over Australia. There were orchid people from overseas (and not just Tasmania) who made the trip from the United States of America and a crew from a Vietnamese television station. The television crew interviewed Collectors Corner Personality and Victorian Register of Judges Ern Kettle (many observers were concerned that the interviewer would not understand his budgie joke).

On Saturday night the annual OSCOV Dinner was held with presentations to Orchids of the Year winners. As well as this we were well entertained by Rex Johnson and a great night was had by all.

On the Sunday after a quick AGM in which none of the Office bearers were able to get rid of their positions the show was dismantled at the end of the day. Within an hour the tent was vacant (a lot quicker than it went up) and we were all in our cars heading for home with our plants.

We hope that next year the show will continue to improve and the set the standard for shows as the largest and best annual show held in Australia. We would again encourage anyone from all over Australia to make your way to the show if at all possible as it is an opportunity not to be missed. OSCOV must thank the Management and staff at Collectors Corner for all their work and support as well as all the exhibitors and members of societies that make this a show that is not to be missed.
